Jiaram crowned Independence Draughts Champion

Kaieteur Sports – The Trophy Stall sponsored Independence Draughts Championship concluded at the Transport Sports Club Pavillion on Sunday last.

Once again, Mr. Jiaram outplayed his rivals to edge past by one point. In February this year Jiaram won the Mashramani Tournament. In this Tournament, Jiaram ended on 23 points while Linden player Floyd Cumberbatch, Steve Bacchus and Godfrey George all ended on 22 points. In the final rounds Godfrey George, who was behind the top players on 19 points, took three valuable points from veteran champion Aubrey Straughn to join the top players. Earlier, Jiaram, Bacchus and Cumberbatch also mesmerized the veteran Aubrey Straughn.

The final standing was Jiaram the winner on 23 points, Floyd Cumberbatch second on 22 points, Steve Bacchus third on 22 points and Godfrey George fourth on 22 points. Jiaram and Floyd Cumberbatch have just participated in the recent Panam Draughts tournament in Paramaribo, Suriname and from records these two are the present dominant force locally in this prestigious board game played worldwide and at high level.

All four top finishers were awarded trophies compliments of Trophy Stall.

The National Draughts Association would like to thank Mr. Ramesh Sunich from Trophy Stall Bourda Market for sponsoring the trophies. M&M Snackette for supplying snacks and Juice Power in Middle Street for the supplying of Juices.

Special gratitude is extended to Mr. Ivor English and Charles Greaves from Transport Sports Club in allowing the use of venue for the games. To all the players who participated in this 60th Independence Anniversary Championship to make it a success, your involvement was remarkable, the association stated.
