Kaieteur Sports – Former national footballer, Vurlon Mills, continues to set the benchmark for football development in Guyana with the official launch of the VMFA High Performance Programme, a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to elevate youth football standards across the country.
The programme was unveiled yesterday at the St Stanislaus Ground in Georgetown, where Mills, founder of the Vurlon Mills Football Academy (VMFA), partnered with InSync and MVP Sports to introduce a modern, science-driven approach to player development.

Backed by MVP Sports, the VMFA High Performance Programme signals a new era for youth football in Guyana, one focused on long-term performance, sustainability, and professionalism. For years, Guyana has possessed raw football talent, but consistent performance and structured development have often fallen short. This programme aims to bridge that gap.
According to Mills, the initiative reflects VMFA’s commitment to giving young athletes access to elite-level development systems. “This programme represents our belief that our young footballers deserve the very best modern football development,” he said.
In his opening remarks, Mills emphasized that talent alone is not enough. “At VMFA, we have always believed that talent must be guided, nurtured, and developed within a structured, scientific, and disciplined environment. That is what our High-Performance Programme is all about.”
The collaboration with INSYNC focuses on integrating football training with sports science, including athletic testing, injury prevention, recovery protocols, and performance monitoring. Modern football demands speed, strength, agility, intelligence, resilience, and discipline—qualities this programme seeks to develop through data-driven assessments and specialized coaching.
“For the first time in youth football, we will be able to track development, identify strengths, and support areas of improvement in a structured way,” Mills explained.
“If we’re (Guyana) serious about producing more national, regional, and international-level players, then we must create an environment that mirrors professional football.”
Mills also noted that while the initiative is football-focused, its philosophy can benefit all sporting disciplines. By exposing young athletes to high-performance systems that develop speed, power, and mental strength, the programme sets a new standard for athlete development in Guyana.
Speaking on behalf of INSYNC, Dr. Neil Barry thanked Mills and VMFA for the partnership, describing the launch as a pivotal moment. “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter—one that will elevate football development standards in Guyana,” he said.
Dr. Barry also acknowledged MVP Sports for their support, adding, “Together, we are building something meaningful for the future of football and athlete development in Guyana.”
Addressing the players directly, Barry encouraged them to fully commit to the programme. “This is your programme. Embrace it, respect it, and commit to it. Greatness is not achieved overnight, it is built through consistent effort, strong habits, and the willingness to push beyond limits.”
With the VMFA High Performance Programme now officially launched, young footballers are being given a rare opportunity to track their development, enhance their technical skills, and improve their physical preparedness through cutting-edge technology, data analysis, and elite performance support, marking a major step forward for youth football in Guyana.
