Kaieteur Sports – The path to qualify for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup got clearer for the Guyana Men’s Under-17 Football Team when they opened their campaign at the 2026 Concacaf Men’s Under-17 Qualifiers with a victory over Bermuda.
The Junior Golden Jaguars now have the Honduras threat to address in a battle to be played at the General Francisco Morazán Stadium in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The match is scheduled to kick off at 20:00hrs (10 pm ECT).
A win for Guyana would mean a major upset for the high ranking home team, but more importantly, Guyana wins the Group and gains automatic qualification to the 2026 FIFA Under-17 World Cup. Only the eight (8) group winners (A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H) will advance to the prestigious event.
On Friday, Guyana did well to secure a 1 – 0 win over a very composed and attacking Bermuda unit. They applied early pressure to the Guyanese defense, testing the custodian, Nyall Kendall, with multiple shots on goal. Guyana did well to keep them at bay while release a few threatening counterattacks of their own.
After a goalless first half, the trading of shots continued until Guyana drew first blood in the 66’, compliments of Matthew Stewart. That goal was the decider but Kendall’s stellar performance between the uprights must be commended since he kept Guyana in the game some beautiful saves.
With the win, Guyana has acquired the lead in Group H, which only has Bermuda and Honduras as the other teams. Suriname was the other team drawn in the Group but was excluded from the tournament due to an “administrative error”, according to a statement from the Suriname Football Association (SVB).
After tonight’s match, the final Group H encounter unfolds on February 11 between Honduras and Bermuda.
In the previous edition of the Concacaf Under-17 Qualifiers, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and the United States topped their respective groups to secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025.
This year’s qualifiers began on February 3 and will culminate on February 12.
