(Kaieteur News) – A new $120 million state-of-the-art Digital X-ray machine was commissioned at the Upper Demerara Hospital in Region 10 on Friday.
The new equipment was commissioned by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony who was joined by Regional Health Officer (RHO), Dr. Gregory Harris, Senior Operating Manager, Mr. Michael Gouveia; Regional Executive Officer (REO), Mr. Dwight John and other officials.
The Ministry of Health in a statement said that the newly installed digital X-ray system, which significantly strengthens diagnostic services within the region, replaces the outdated analog technology, delivering faster image processing, improved accuracy, and enhanced diagnostic capabilities to better support patient care.

Kaieteur News understands that to accommodate this new machine, retrofitting works were done at the hospital to ensure that the facility meets modern safety and operational standards required for the efficient use of advanced diagnostic equipment, and that aspect of works cost $72,217,844.
Dr. Anthony said the government had committed to upgrading healthcare infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to quality medical services nationwide.
He explained that the transition to digital imaging will reduce waiting times, improve patient outcomes, and enable healthcare professionals to make more timely and accurate diagnoses.
“Today we are very pleased to commission this digital X-ray machine. All facilities in this region will now be equipped with digital X-ray systems, replacing the older analog machines,” the minister stated.
The RHO noted that the new equipment will greatly benefit residents of Blueberry Hill, Wismar, and surrounding communities.
“We want our residents to have access to efficient healthcare services on a 24-hour basis. Our duty is to serve the people of Region Ten,” he added.
The ministry shared that the commissioning of the digital X-ray machine will reduce the need for patient referrals to other regions, easing travel burdens and improving access to critical diagnostic services.
“This investment aligns with the Ministry of Health’s broader agenda to modernise healthcare facilities, strengthen service delivery, and build a resilient, people-centered healthcare system that meets the evolving needs of the population,” the ministry reported.
