Kaieteur Sports – Following a highly successful year of competition in 2025, the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) has reaffirmed its commitment to hosting its full slate of annual tournaments in 2026, underscoring its focus on sustained player development and competitive growth.
This assurance was given by Chairman of the GSA Competitions Committee, Deje Dias, in the association’s most recent update, where he emphasized the critical role that regular, structured competition plays in building both junior and senior talent.
According to Dias, the GSA’s ability to successfully stage all of its major domestic tournaments in 2025, along with additional international championships, has laid a strong foundation for continued progress in the coming year.
“2025 was a very productive year for the association,” Dias noted. “We were able to host all of our major competitions and expand our calendar with two international championships. That level of consistency is vital if we are serious about developing our players.”
Dias stressed that tournaments are not merely events on a calendar, but essential tools in shaping competitive athletes.
“Tournaments are the cornerstone of player development,” he explained. “Second only to training, match practice in a tournament setting is the high-octane exposure squash players need to implement all techniques.”
He added that regular competition allows players to test their skills under pressure, gain valuable match experience, and better understand tactical and mental aspects of the game—elements that cannot be fully replicated in training alone.
The GSA’s commitment to maintaining a full tournament schedule in 2026 is expected to benefit players across all age groups, providing consistent opportunities for juniors to transition into higher levels of competition while enabling senior players to remain sharp and competitive regionally and internationally.
Action is set to commence early next month, with the BCQS Masters Competitions, slated for February 4-7 at the Georgetown Club Courts.
With momentum firmly on its side, the association believes that continuity in competition will not only strengthen individual performances but also elevate the overall standard of squash in Guyana.
As preparations begin for the 2026 calendar, the GSA remains focused on building on the successes of the past year, ensuring that tournaments remain at the heart of its development strategy.
