(Kaieteur News) – The mother and grandmother of a 17-year-old suspect behind the death of a 48-year-old man, which occured over the weekend, said the teen acted in self-defense.
The claim followed the death of Carter Baboolall, of Mandir Street, Nigg Settlement, Corentyne, who was stabbed to death on Friday evening allegedly by a teen, a construction worker who lives in the same community. The incident reportedly occurred between the vicinity of the Nigg Post Office and a Western Union outlet.
Immediately after the incident, the young man kept himself hidden over the weekend even as police sought his whereabouts. On Monday, relatives who spoke to Kaieteur News confirmed that he came out of hiding after he was convinced to turn himself in. The teen surrendered himself to the police in the company of an attorney.
In an interview with this publication, both his mother and grandmother said the teen is usually a quiet person, which, according to them, could only mean that he was pushed to the edge. The grandmother noted that the now dead man frequently provoked him, and had even assaulted him many times.
“He’s a very good child. Since he was a baby, I mind him. This man ah molest him. The two used to work at a wash bay. This man always molest meh grandson. Anywhere he see him. Mandir, anywhere. The man cuff he up, lash he up with a wood and so.”
She said he told her what was happening to him. The last time he complained to her was two weeks ago, telling her that Baboolall had made threats on his life. The grandmother advised him to ignore the man and file a report at the police station, but the teen refused, having lost confidence in the police after a previous report of being assaulted in another matter was not acted upon.
His mother explained that she was not condoning his action, maintaining that what he did was wrong.
At the same time, she reasoned that her son felt cornered that evening. He had told her that the man once again approached him with threats, and even punched him, forcing him to defend himself.
“He is a loving and caring son. I didn’t expect that he would do this. But then again, the man was tempting him all the time. I’m not saying that it was right with what he did. He’s wrong. But for the past four years he was tempting my son. Anywhere he see him, he molest him. Used to cuss him, call him all sorts of names. The man choked him. He choke him at the wash bay, and because of the choking incident, the boss lady knock off this guy (Baboolall), and since he get knock off from the wash bay, that is how things start,” the mother related.
A neighbour of the teen also noted that the teen is a relatively peaceful individual.
The teen’s mother said her son has been traumatised by the incident. He remains in police custody.
Baboolall was reportedly stabbed multiple times, and was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital, Corentyne where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He lived alone, and had no known relatives in the country. His landlord told Kaieteur News that the man, who had occupied the apartment for nearly seven years, mostly avoided interactions and lived a private life.
