Cristy Campbell’s elevation to the International Tennis Federation is a tremendous boost for the local sport
Kaieteur Sports – Statistician Charwayne Walker has expressed the belief that Cristy Campbell’s elevation to serve on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) is a tremendous boost for the local sport.
Walker looked at the rich tradition Guyana had over time in Tennis and feels can achieve success in the future with the development programmes available and the interaction with the ITF can bring. He noted that, the land of many waters won its first lawn tennis championship in 1953, the Brandon Cup under the captaincy of Edgar Redwin with stalwarts like Ivan Phillips and Derek Phang playing great supporting roles.

Guyana’s next Brandon Cup triumph was four years later 1957 playing at home again under the captaincy of Edgar Redwin again with Ian McDonald joining Ivan Phillips and Derek Phang.
Walker informed that, our last Brandon success was 1976 playing at home with the Phillips brothers at the helm, Evan and Cecil Phillips with their father Ivan Phillips the coach.

Guyana also won the Phillips trophy Debbie Phillips and Kean Gibson dominating their female counters from Jamaica, Barbados and Bahamas.
Walker disclosed that, the sport of lawn tennis was always graced with grand slam winners visiting the land of many waters. In 1945, the American troops stationed at Atkinson invited 5-times Grand Slam champion Pauline Betz, who played several invitation matches against fellow American Pro Doroty Bundy.
In October 1960, the land of the Majestic Kaieteur Falls was blessed with the presence of former world number one and 11-times grand slam winner, the iconic Althea Gibson, who played several exhibition matches against Karol Fageros at the GCC tennis court. World number one Fred Perry also visited in 1946.
Walker opines, “With Cristy’s dedication and work ethic as a former champion, it has now been impacted to her administrative functions which is having a telling effect on our young lawn tennis talent. Her new role could serve as great motivation to get Guyana back as Caribbean champs.
