Kaieteur Sports – President of Guyana His Excellency, Dr. Irfaan Ali has named former Guyana/West Indies stars Ramnaresh Sarwan and Roger Harper, as Mentor/Coach and Head of Women’s Cricket Development, with major moves to boost sports across the indigenous communities gathering massive momentum.

President Ali made a few huge announcements which are set to reshape the sporting world of the indigenous communities across Guyana
The announcement came on Saturday during the Head of State’s visit to Everest Ground as part of the annual Heritage Games where over 800 indigenous athletes from across Guyana’s 10 administrative regions took part in some highly-competitive sports action as part of the 2025 edition of the traditional Games.
Sarwan, an ex- West Indies and Guyana captain has been given the role of mentor and coach for indigenous talent, while former West Indies all-rounder and international head coach Harper, will lead the development of women’s cricket, with special focus on indigenous communities.
“He (Sarwan) will be responsible for working with indigenous boards and groups to select the first indigenous team to be part of the cricket infrastructure. I have asked Roger Harper to develop women‘s cricket across the country, including women’s cricket in the indigenous communities”, said the Head of State.
President Ali added that the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), the Guyana Football Federation and the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF), have a mandate to ensure indigenous teams are an integral part of their respective sports structures.
“I have also asked the Guyana Cricket Board to include a national indigenous team to start within their national competitions and trials. So, the best males and females will have an opportunity. I have asked the Minister to do the same for football, volleyball, and basketball,” the President outlined.
Indigenous teams are also set to compete in national tournaments, adding to the ‘One Guyana’ vision which will see more athletes, women most notably being more involved in the continued success of Guyana’s rich history in sports.
