Kaieteur Sports – For the first time in its history, Saints Hockey Club (SHC) is competing in an international junior hockey tournament, making their debut at the Paragon International Indoor Hockey Tournament in Trinidad & Tobago. Competing in the Under 17 and Under 21 boys and girls categories, the opening day proved to be successful for the club, with all teams securing victories and maintaining clean sheets.
In the Under 17 Girls division, SHC faced off against Checkers and emerged 4-0 winners. Rising star Makaylah Poole opened the scoring in the 3rd minute with a field goal before doubling her tally just four minutes later from a penalty corner. Carenza Copeland then announced herself on the international stage with her first-ever goals for SHC, striking in the 8th and 10th minutes to complete the commanding win.
The Under 17 Boys also began their campaign in style with a 2-0 win over Fatima. Ezekiel Moses found the back of the net in the 5th minute from a penalty corner, before Fayed Mohamed doubled the lead with a composed field goal in the 9th minute, both marking their first international goals.
Later in the evening, the Under 21 Boys produced another strong performance against Fatima, also winning 2-0. Captain Jabari Lovell, bringing valuable international experience from SHC’s participation at the Ventures Tournament earlier this year, led by example. He converted two penalty corners in the 5th and 9th minutes, securing victory for his side and reinforcing his role as a key figure in guiding the younger players.
In an invited comment, SHC coach Tivesarid Garnett said, “The Saints Hockey Club had a great first day. All three of our teams did well, working together and staying focused on their game plan. Three wins and three clean sheets made for a great first day. There were some early nerves but the payers overcame them with a great team spirit, and we hope to keep it up for the rest of the tournament.”
This marks an important milestone in the club’s history marking its first international tour with junior teams, and its inaugural participation at the Paragon Tournament.
The Saints Hockey Club gratefully acknowledges the support of its sponsors: Umami Incorporated, MVP Sports, Sterling Products Limited, Demerara Mutual Assurance Society, and John Lewis Styles. Their contributions have made this historic opportunity possible.
