Kaieteur Sports – Slingerz Football Club are on the brink of wrapping up the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League title, and they could do it in style within their next two matches against Fruta Conquerors and Monedderlust FC.
The Vergenoegen giants are in cruise control at the top of the table, unbeaten, untouchable, and sitting pretty on 40 points from 14 games. Two more wins would push them to 46 points; a total no other side can even dream of catching. The title is within touching distance.
The numbers tell the story of pure dominance. Slingerz have rattled the back of the net 81 times while conceding just three; a jaw-dropping +78 goal difference that screams superiority.
Their latest demolition job came last weekend when Coach Jamaal Shabazz’s men thumped “West Side” rivals Den Amstel 5–0.
Tournament hotshot Kemar Beckford bagged yet another hat-trick to stretch his lead in the Golden Boot race, while Trinidad and Tobago youth international Derrell Garcia and former Guyana youth skipper Solomon Austin added their names to the scoresheet. It was a performance that underlined why Slingerz are a cut above the rest.
Next up, Fruta Conquerors this Saturday at the GFF National Training Centre, followed by Monedderlust on October 4 at the same venue. Win them both, and the 2015/16 champions will officially reclaim the Elite League crown, no calculators needed.
Meanwhile, the chasing pack are simply playing catch-up. Western Tigers, sitting in second with 31 points from 16 outings, have shown flashes of brilliance but far too much inconsistency to keep pace with the leaders.
Breathing down their necks are the Guyana Police Force FC in third on 30 points from just 13 matches, showing ruthless efficiency with a +33 goal difference. Wayne Dover’s men still have five games in hand, including a showdown with Slingerz, but even maximum points won’t be enough to topple the frontrunners.
The Guyana Defence Force FC, perched in fourth with 25 points from 12 matches, remain a dangerous dark horse. With a +41-goal difference, they’ll fancy their chances of climbing into second or third before the final whistle of the season.
Further down, Monedderlust (17 points) and Santos (16 points) are battling to stay afloat in mid-table, while Ann’s Grove (13 points) and Den Amstel (12 points) wrestle with inconsistency.
Fruta Conquerors, once a powerhouse, find themselves shockingly stuck on 12 points after 13 matches, staring at a season to forget.
And then, at the very bottom, lies Mainstay Goldstar. Fourteen games, fourteen losses. Seven goals scored, 132 conceded. A -125-goal difference and a total of -3 points paints the grim picture of a campaign they’ll want to erase from memory as soon as possible.
As things stand, Slingerz FC have turned the league into their playground. The only real drama left might be the battle for the runner-up spot and the dogfight for survival at the foot of the table. For the rest of the league, the writing’s already on the wall and the crown belongs to Slingerz FC.
