Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s run at the 2025 Junior Pan American Games came to an abrupt end on Friday, following a crushing 11–0 defeat to the United States.
The national women’s junior team struggled throughout this year’s championship, having already suffered two heavy defeats in their earlier matches. Chile handed them a 12–1 thrashing in their opener, followed by a 9–0 loss to Mexico.
Facing a dominant U.S. side, the Guyanese showed some fight in the opening quarter, holding the score at 1–0. However, USA’s pugnacious striker Alaina McVeigh doubled the lead five minutes later, before Maci Bradford buried a penalty corner in the 20th minute to make it 3–0.
Just a minute later, McVeigh struck again to extend the lead to 4–0. Talia Schenk converted a penalty to add a fifth, before Rylie Wollerton netted twice in the 34th and 42nd minutes. Ava Moore then made it 8–0.
McVeigh returned to complete her haul with goals in the 51st and 52nd minutes, while Schenk scored her second to seal an emphatic 11–0 victory over the lacklustre Guyanese.
This result underscores a broader issue. Perhaps now is the time for those in charge to make one final push to give hockey in Guyana a permanent home. From my perspective, this team’s shortcomings are not due to a lack of talent; fitness levels are solid, and many players have been active in the lead-up to the games but rather a lack of adequate preparation.
With the country investing in several major sporting facilities in recent years, it is my hope that the Ministry of Sport will finally turn its attention to hockey. The call has been long overdue, Mister Minister.
