Republic Bank renews RHTYSC Summer Camp sponsorship for 16th consecutive year
National Under 15 player Raffel Mackenzie receives sponsorship from a representative of Republic Bank while RHTYSC members and other staff of the bank looks on.
Kaieteur Sports – Over the last fifteen years, the cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, MS has hosted an annual Grade Six Summer Camp for students preparing to enter secondary school for the first time. More than 1300 students have benefitted over the years from the camp which is sponsored by the Rose Hall Town branch of Republic Bank [Guyana] Ltd. The bank on Thursday last renewed its sponsorship of the camp for the 16th successive year with a simple presentation ceremony at the newly opened Williamsbury office.
Cricket Manager Robby Kissoonlall in brief remarks noted, that the main objective of the camp is to assist grade six students to make a successful transition from the primary to secondary level. The club he noted would work along with the students to make sure that they understand the cultural differences between the two levels and that they understand the importance of an educational background in their lives.
The camp, which would be conducted by a team of highly trained educators, would involve the teaching of four subjects – Maths, English, Social Studies and Science, while students would also be exposed to basic Spanish.
The camp started yesterday, Monday 14th July, at the renovated main pavilion at the Area H Ground in Rose Hall Town.
Students would also be involved in several lectures on topics of importance such as drug abuse, peer pressure, importance of discipline, HIV/AIDS, personal hygiene, classroom manners and public speaking. The students would also be introduced to some basic coaching on how to play cricket by the cricket coaches attached to the cricket club, which has produced three test cricketers, seventy-five national players and a total of one hundred and twenty-eight players for Berbice at all levels.
Kissoonlall disclosed that over seven hundred thousand dollars worth of items would be shared out to members of the camp, including an educational package worth four thousand dollars to each student. The top ten students of the camp would receive a wide array of prizes including an electric bike, cycles, electronic tablets, designer watches, cell phones, designer clothing, household and kitchen utensils and cosmetics hampers among others.
National under15 player Raffel Mackenzie expressed thanks on behalf of his club mates of the Rose Hall Town Poonai Pharmacy under13, Farfan and Mendes Ltd under15, Bakewell under17 and Second Division, Pepsi under19 and under23, Metro Stationery Females and the Namilco Thunderbolt Flour first division teams. He noted that the bank over the years has been a remarkable friend to the club and stated that the camp has assisted numerous students to make a successful transition from the primary to secondary level.
Acting Branch Manager Denisa Ramdial stated the bank was pleased to be associated with the summer camp as part of its corporate responsibility. She expressed confidence in the successful hosting of the four weeks camp and urged the students to take advantage of the opportunities been given to them by the bank and the club.
