Scenes from the Game Changers and Alexander Village clash during the opening night of the June Madness Futsal Championship.
Kaieteur Sports – The highly anticipated June Madness Futsal Championship got underway Tuesday evening at the iconic Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, delivering a thrilling start with five action-packed matches. Young Stars, Game Changers, Footsteppers, Corinthians, and Albouystown all opened their campaigns with victories.
In the opening encounter, Young Stars edged Broad Street 2-1 in a nail-biting extra-time finish. Broad Street’s Jeremiah Caesar scored the tournament’s first goal in the 7th minute, but Elijah DeAbreu equalized for Young Stars in the 13th. With neither team able to break the deadlock in regulation time, Tsekedi Sealey fired home a dramatic winner in the 33rd minute, sending the Young Stars bench into celebration.
Match two saw Game Changers outlast Alexander Village in another extra-time thriller. The sides ended regulation tied at 1-1, but the drama escalated in the added period. Timothy Kennedy gave Alexander Village a 2-1 lead five minutes into extra time, only for Kacy John to equalize a minute later. With the clock winding down, Emmanuel Lewis netted the decisive strike in the 38th minute to give Game Changers a hard-fought 3-2 victory.
Footsteppers flexed their attacking muscles in a 4-2 win over Tiger Bay. Isaiah Sam delivered a standout performance with a brace, scoring in the 16th and 22nd minutes. Troy Henry opened the scoring in the 3rd, while Jonathan Bailey sealed the win with a 29th-minute effort. Tiger Bay managed two goals in response but were ultimately outpaced.
Corinthians turned in a dominant display, cruising past Paradise Invaders in a 4-0 rout. Darwin Martinez got things started in the 5th minute, followed by Adriane Talla who bagged a brace with goals in the 7th and 24th. Carlos Escobar added the fourth to cap off a commanding win.
The final match of the night was nothing short of a spectacle as Albouystown demolished Campbellville 9-0, thanks in large part to Ezekiel Telford’s mastery of the yellow ball rule — where yellow ball goals count for double. After Akeem July opened the scoring in the 6th minute and Timothy Thomas followed up in the 8th, Telford’s yellow ball strike in the 9th pushed the lead to 4-0. He added two more goals in the 15th and 26th minutes, while July scored again in the 15th. Wainwright Adams completed his brace with strikes in the 17th and 30th minutes, wrapping up a resounding win.
The action continues tonight with another exciting slate of matchups, first up Make It Happen will tackle Street Vibez, after that Kingston Ballers will go up against Team Finishers, in match #3 YMCA will battle with Agricola Ballers before United Ballers faces off with The Spaniards while Sophia Ballers will go head-to-head with Laing Avenue in the final match of the evening.
