May 10, 2025 Dem Boys Seh, Features / Columnists
Kaieteur News- Dem boys seh is one thing to try ride a wild horse… is another thing to try bribe it with sugar and expect it gon gallop in yuh direction.
De government, in dem infinite wisdom, seh dem fed up with de traditional media—Kaieteur News ask too much question and Stabroek ain’t easy. De PPP feel that these newspapers holding dem feet to de fire too much.
So dem bright minds decide fuh pump more State ads into social media which dem feel gan be more sympathetic. Dem decide dat Facebook and TikTok gan be de new Ministry of Information. Dem seh, “Why not give lil SuckyBoss_592 and OneManArmyTV some taxpayer dollar to ‘spread de message’?” Dem even had meeting with what dem call social media influencers.
Well buddy, de message spread alright… like wildfire in de backdam. But instead of influence is sheer influenza coming out of social media. Instead of polished news reports, press releases and sanitized photos, dem end up wid voice note war, meme massacre, and video upon video of people bawling, cussing, busing and confusing de public. One minute a man seh de President resign, next minute a next man seh is fake news—but by then, 50,000 people done believe it and planning candlelight vigil.
De same social media dat was supposed to save de government from “biased” reporters turn round and bite dem like a jumbie dog. De government now trying fuh play fireman—every day is press statement to correct some foolishness wah de social media influencers publish. Social media now turn de Wild West of misinformation.
Now de PPP realize, too late, that social media is like trench water—yuh can’t control wah come out.
De irony? Dem forget that newspaper still get de last word. Is de editorial, de analysis, de investigation—yes, even de grammar—that still shape de national conversation. While TikTok deh showing how to cook during protest, de newspapers deh showing how de chaos start in de first place.
Dem boys seh next time yuh try replace surgeon with bush doctor, don’t complain when yuh get septicemia.
Social media ain’t no choirboy—it’s a rum shop with a megaphone. And now, everybody shouting. Dem boys seh… be careful wah yuh empower.
Talk half. Leff half!
