(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh that Guyana must be careful when people come with big smiles, handshakes and small cheques, because sometimes the size of the cheque is inversely proportional to the size of the friendship.
The latest American gift is US$2 million for an unmanned aerial surveillance system. Dem boys seh, thank you very much—but that is chicken feed compared with what China has been putting on the table. China, years ago, gave Guyana about US$5 million in military equipment and has continued supporting the country with military assistance.
So, when Uncle Sam come with US$2 million and tell Guyana how much he loves we, dem boys seh don’t get too emotional. Look at the receipt first.
Because the Americans are not exactly flying drones over Guyana out of pure brotherly affection. They have a drug problem, and a good part of the cocaine leaving South America has to cross somebody else’s backyard before reaching the United States.
And guess whose backyard is conveniently located?
Guyana.
So, the surveillance system is useful to Guyana, yes. But it is also useful to Washington. In fact, Uncle Sam is spending a little money to put a bigger lock on his own front door. Dem boys seh that is not charity; that is investment.
But what really causing dem boys to scratch dem head is the other American love affair.
America coming here talking sweet, signing agreements and showing interest in Guyana’s bauxite, partly because Washington wants to outflank China and reduce Beijing’s influence in our mining sector.
Dem boys seh that is when the chicken start laughing at the fox.
Because while America telling Guyana, “We are your friends,” it is also imposing heavy tariffs on Guyanese exports. So, America wants our bauxite, wants to weaken China’s position, wants our strategic cooperation—and then puts a tariff at the gate when Guyanese goods trying to enter its market.
Dem boys seh Guyana must stop choosing friends based on who smiles widest. In geopolitics, everybody has an appetite. The smart country simply makes sure it is not the chicken on the menu.
Talk half. Leff half.
