(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh Guyana is a country of innovation. We does watch what de rest of de world doing, and then we does improve pon it—or at least find a way to make it more Guyanese.
Take fast food. De world got drive-through restaurants. You drive up, order yuh food, collect it through a window and drive away. No need to park. No need to get out yuh vehicle. Nice, efficient and convenient.
But Guyana say, “Hold on. We could do better than that.”
So now we got drive-through markets.
Yuh does see roadside vendors selling mangoes, plantains, cassava, pepper, tomatoes or whatever else in season. A driver pulls up alongside de stalls, stops dead in de road, winds down de window and starts shopping.
No parking required. No walking required. No getting out required. No fetching bags in yuh hands.
And certainly, no consideration required for de twenty-five vehicles behind he. Because once de driver stop, traffic stop.
De driver might buy two bunches plantain, three mangoes, a pound of cassava and half pound pepper. Then he might remember that he need cucumber. So, everybody behind he got to wait while de roadside supermarket conducts its business.
Dem boys seh this is what makes Guyana special. In other countries, people go to market and park. In Guyana, de market come to de road.
But this new innovation got one serious problem: pedestrians. Imagine you stop by a roadside stall to buy something. You standing there minding yuh own business when suddenly one SUV decide to join de shopping expedition. Before you know it, four tyres heading straight for yuh foot.
You jump left. De driver turn left.
You jump right. De driver turn right.
Because apparently de roadside vendor is now a drive-through, and yuh foot is just an obstacle in de customer experience.
Dem boys seh this thing need some attention before somebody foot become part of somebody else’s grocery bill. Pedestrians have a right to keep their toes.
Guyana done invent drive-through banking, drive-through food, and now drive-through market.
Next thing, dem boys seh, we gon get drive-through government office.
You drive up, blow yuh horn, hand in yuh passport through de window—and drive away before anybody ask you to come back tomorrow.
Talk half. Leff half.
