Family seeks justice as Haslington shooting victim left unable to walk, now dependent on pampers
…cites police silence
Kaieteur News- The family of a 23-year-old mechanic is pleading for justice after he was critically injured in a shooting during a home invasion in Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The injured man, identified as Keran Persaud is now unable to walk and must rely on pampers for daily care. He is hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

The shooting occurred around 00: 30hrs and 01:00h on Monday last, while Persaud and his younger brother, Navin Persaud, were repairing a vehicle in their yard.
The brothers were ambushed by two masked gunmen. The brother recounted that he had stepped to the front of the yard to retrieve tools when the attackers appeared.
“By the time I raise up back, two gunmen come in the yard and tell me, ‘Don’t move.’ I try to fight one, but I hear the gun crank, and I run to wake up my father,” the younger Persaud said. When he returned, he found his brother on the ground, bleeding beside the car.
Close circuit television (CCTV) footage reportedly shows the two gunmen loitering around the Persaud property before the attack. They fled the scene in the direction of Golden Grove, and notably, nothing was stolen from the home.

Persaud was shot five times, twice in the abdomen, once in the shoulder, and twice in his right foot. He was rushed to the Melanie Fire Station for emergency transport to the Georgetown hospital.
Doctors have confirmed that a bone in his back is broken and suspect serious nerve damage. However, surgery has been delayed as medical staff wait to determine whether anything could be done to restore nerve function.
The injured Persaud’s mother, identified only as 39-year-old Padmini, shared the difficult reality her son now faces.
She told Kaieteur News, “he talking and everything, but he can’t walk. He deh on pampers. We got to lift he, clean he, help he move. Them doctors say even if they operate, it could take two to three years before he walk again.”
The emotional and physical toll on the family has been compounded by what they say is a lack of proper response and communication from the police.
“One time after that, police called, … they said go at the station, they take the information …, when my son go two afternoons, they cannot reach her and they never call back, no police never come visit we back, and tell we nothing. Nobody (police) ain’t giving we no updates, if they searching, nothing them ain’t telling we.”
The distraught mother continued, “I feel like I ain’t getting no justice, no justice, because I got to turn out back Monday to work … Monday I have to go out back to work that is why I am studying, who is going to look at my son when he deh home? Family help yes, but when he go home, he still have to get look, he still have to get pampers.”
Persaud, the eldest of her children, now faces a long road to recovery with uncertainty surrounding both his health and the outcome of the investigation.
The family continues to plead with authorities to take the case seriously and provide updates on any progress made in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner and Commander of the ECD district, Khali Pareshram, informed this publication that the investigation into the matter is still ongoing.
