Dear Editor,
China’s offer to aid with Venezuela and the Ministry’s rash response, which pushes China aside may be a missed opportunity for our country. If we all agree that the process at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is where the issue should be and will be fully resolved, then we can also make space for China to aid in maintaining peace during the ICJ process. One key area where China can show its diplomatic strength and influence as a mutual partner and historical ally to both Guyana and Venezuela is by aiding in the demilitarization of Ankoko Island.
China should be given the opportunity to help Venezuela remove their troops from the border while also ending Venezuela’s occupation of our half of Ankoko Island. China has the ability to ensure that this happens and they have offered to use their influence to keep peace between our countries. The government of Guyana should give China a chance to obtain these two key achievements on our western border so as to ensure that the conflict between Guyana and Venezuela does not escalate after the final and binding ruling of the ICJ. It will also provide an opportunity for the U.S. and China to cooperate in maintaining peace. A cooperation that will be very useful if also extended to other parts of the world where peace is also needed.
Best regards,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
