No to Uranium Mining in Guyana

According to news reports, U92 Energy Corp, the Canadian based uranium company formed specifically for conducting uranium mining in Guyana, anticipates approval in this month of August from the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA for their drill programme.
U92 Energy Corp 20.6 million pounds (Mlbs) uranium project located in Region Seven Guyana has secured, according to reports, rights to explore 92.2 square kilometres in Guyana. In March of 2026 they partnered with Orbit Garant for a phase one 5,000 metre diamond drill programme in the Kurupung area and confirmed that the diamond drill rig is currently in Guyana and is or will be on site soon to start phase one drilling for uranium in high-priority project targets.
The Environmental Act of Guyana is crystal clear on processes for applying for environmental permits. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website lists companies who have applied for environmental permits currently and in the past. Nowhere on the EPA website is there any application from U92 Energy Corp. So, unless there is some secret, illegal process at play here, any expectation or anticipation of U92 environmental permit in this month August is highly questionable and needs immediate clarification from the Environmental Protection Agency.
We remind U92 Energy Corp and the Environmental Protection Agency that the Environmental Protection Act, part IV requires mandatory environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for projects requiring execution of construction works, installations, interference with any ecosystem or activity in the natural surroundings including those involving installation for treatment of waste water, industrial or domestic waste and extraction and conversion of mineral resources, all of which U92 are or will be involved in, before any environmental permit or authorisation can be granted.
We note and support statements made by many objecting to U92 Energy Corp uranium project including those made by Vice Chair of Region 7 warning that “Guyana must not gamble with the future of the Middle Mazuruni” and “Hands off the Kurupung”. The APA also clearly stated that the U92 project violates indigenous rights, land rights and exposes the lack of expertise, knowledge and regulatory processes to address uranium mining.
We join with all who have spoken out against the dangers and environmental damage of uranium mining which if approved will leave a legacy of destruction to the health and wellbeing of the indigenous people who live in the Middle Mazaruni, to the flora and fauna who inhabit this area, to the land which provides livelihoods and to the rivers and waterways including the mighty Mazaruni which provides life and sustenance to so many.
