The Importance of Listening to Children: Why Every Child’s Voice Deserves to be Heard and Believed

I believe that, as a society, we are yet to fully understand the importance of truly listening to our children. This may be because children do not always have the words to clearly explain what they are feeling, but they communicate through their actions, emotions and behaviour.

A change in a child’s mood, withdrawal from activities they once enjoyed, increased fearfulness or sudden struggles at school may all be signs that something is wrong and should never be ignored. Paying attention to these changes is essential in helping us recognise concerns early and provide the support children need.

As adults, we have a responsibility to listen to children, not just hear their words, but truly pay attention to their concerns. As a guest on our programme once shared, “we need to listen more than we speak, and treat children with the same respect we expect from them.”

Every child deserves to feel safe enough to speak, and every child deserves to be believed when they share their experiences.

Too often, children remain silent because they fear they will not be taken seriously, that they may be blamed, or that no one will take action. When we dismiss their feelings or concerns, we send a message that their voices do not matter.

During a recent conversation, a parent shared an important reminder: when children ask questions, even questions that may seem obvious, it is important that we take the time to listen and respond. It is not simply about the question itself, but about the fact that children are looking to us for guidance, reassurance and understanding. The way we respond helps determine whether they feel safe enough to continue sharing with us.

Creating a safer society for children begins with trust, compassion and action. Parents, teachers, caregivers and communities must work together to ensure that children know they are valued, protected and supported.

A child’s voice may be small, but it carries great importance. When we listen to children, we empower them, protect them and create a future where every child has the opportunity to grow in a safe and nurturing environment.
