Fifty-four (54) years ago we became a Republic in 1970 and in the years since we have grown as a nation rich in the cultural heritage of its diverse peoples.
The ERC recognizes that our unique melting pot of cultures, traditions, and perspectives has enriched Guyana’s national identity. Moreover, the Commission firmly believes that embracing our diversity is not only essential to further consolidating our gains and freedoms as a Republic but also serves as a source of strength and resilience.
Republic Day marks a substantial milestone in our history signifying the ultimate, formal, political act to rid ourselves of the last vestiges of colonial rule, as we embarked on our journey as a sovereign nation. This year’s theme, “Celebrating our Peoples and our Prosperity,” resonates with the ERC’s mandate of promoting harmonious relations among all Guyanese.
The Commission therefore implores all Guyanese to participate in the national activities and celebrations planned for Republic Day/Mashramani, reflect on the progress Guyana has made as a nation, and the importance that unity and inclusivity extols in our continued journey of overcoming challenges. The ERC remains committed to playing its role in fostering positive relations and promoting greater tolerance and respect in Guyana. We believe that by working together, we can build a stronger, more harmonious nation for all Guyanese.
Happy Republic Day from the Ethnic Relations Commission!
Regards,
Ethnic Relations Commission
