…Ambassador says focus to be on oil, infrastructure boom

(Kaieteur News) – French companies are heightening their interest in tapping into Guyana’s oil, logistics and infrastructure sectors, French Ambassador to Guyana, Olivier Plançon has revealed.

Speaking at the Private Sector Commission’s (PSC) 34^th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held last Friday at the Guyana Marriott Hotel, Plançon said that since his country opened an embassy here in 2025, there have been genuine expressions of interest by French companies to invest in Guyana.

“Today, there are about 10 French companies operating in sectors as diverse as aerospace, transportation, logistics, engineering, oil, and even catering. At the same time, we at the embassy have supported about 20 other French companies expressing strong interest in investing in Guyana,” he said.

The ambassador reminded that there was a delegation of French companies led by Mouvement des Entreprises de France (MEDEF) which visited Guyana in 2024, and is working with the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) to organize a business mission to Guyana this year.

“France has internationally recognised expertise across strategic sectors, including aerospace, with global leaders such as Airbus, Tsalas, Safour…France accounts for 18% of EU agricultural production, and as we make the subjects within the EU renewable energies, batteries with six giant factories under development, AI, healthcare, and together these strengths create significant opportunities for Guyanese businesses seeking partnerships, investment, innovation, and access to the broader European market,” he highlighted.

The ambassador noted that the embassy’s opening also reflects a clear and shared commitment to strengthening the bilateral economic, security and friendship ties, while playing an active role in regional integration, particularly through the French overseas communities in the Americas and the Caribbean.

“Our countries are both democracies, and both our countries are fiercely attached to our democratic values. As democracies, we face similar challenges here in the region in terms of security, in terms of economic and sustainable development,” he added.

Ambassador Plançon disclosed that the decision by France to open an embassy in Georgetown was influenced by several key factors that underscore France’s desire to develop a future oriented relationship between the two countries. This will in turn aid in the strengthening of trade and investment relations, while developing and promoting economic and sustainable development, which is a priority.

“I would like to highlight the central role of our regional economic department, based in Bogota, which works to support our activities in Guyana. Our French foreign trade advisors, Jean Francois Journal and Christophe, whom you know, act as facilitators for French companies wishing to invest here. Our foreign trade advisors for Guyana are a part of a regional group of 11 advisors for CARICOM, chaired by Mr. Sureau. The French foreign trade advisors, for those of you who do not know, is an originality of the French set up to support international business initiatives,” the ambassador said.

The French diplomat said that the appointment of a new economic affairs officer last December, the volunteers and entrepreneurs who have an official mandate from the French government helped to pave the way for investors to participate in the Guyana Energy Conference in February.

“Not to mention the fact that we are now working in close coordination with Business France, a government agency supporting French companies abroad, as well as foreign companies wishing to expand to France, including first and foremost, Canadians,” he added.
