Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s National U15 will kick off their CONCACAF Championship campaign today, from 4:00 pm, against Barbados at the Stadion Ergilio Hato in Willemstad.
The tournament, set for August 6 to 13, sees the participation of 39 Concacaf Member Associations, including two guest nations, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, representing the Asian Football Confederation.
This marks Qatar’s return after its last appearance in 2019 in Miami, USA.
For their fourth appearance at the championship, the Guyanese boys are grouped alongside Guadeloupe, Barbados, and St Lucia in Group F.
Following today’s match, Guyana will go head-to-head with Guadeloupe on Monday, and subsequently, their final group stage encounter awaits against St Lucia on Tuesday.
The junior national squad is composed of players affiliated with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Academy Programme, spanning regions such as Bartica, Berbice, Rupununi, Georgetown, East Demerara, Upper Demerara, as well as international talents hailing from the United States and Canada.
Reflecting on the challenging task of team selection, Head Coach Devon Winter highlighted the abundance of quality players available.
He emphasised that the selection process was rooted in evaluating discipline, technique, tactics, physical and mental strength, as well as game intelligence.
Winter expressed his optimism about the team’s performance, stating his belief that they would do Guyana proud.
He underlined the collective effort of the coaching staff and players in preparing for the tournament, noting that success hinges on their execution during the actual matches against their group competitors.
For approximately seven weeks, the players have undergone thorough preparation at the Federation’s National Training Centre in Providence.
The coaching team, including Assistant Coach Selwyn Isaacs, Goalkeeper Coach Andre Gibbs, Physiotherapist Pablino Cupido, and Team Manager Joyann Williams, have diligently overseen the training process, ensuring the team’s readiness for the tournament. (Rawle Toney)
