(Kaieteur News) – Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 32-year-old gold miner during an altercation at Sands Backdam, Cuyuni River, on Monday morning. A 27-year-old private security guard is in custody in connection with the killing.
The victim has been identified as Ceton Smith, also known as Ceton Courtman, a resident of St. Monica Village, Upper Pomeroon River.
According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 11:50 hrs on July 6, 2026, after Smith and the security guard — who is employed by a private security firm — became involved in a dispute. Investigators say the confrontation escalated when the suspect allegedly drew a firearm and discharged a single round, striking Smith in the head.
The injured miner was rushed to the Aurora Gold Mines (AGM) Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending medic. An initial examination of the body found a single circular wound at the centre of Smith’s head, consistent with a gunshot injury.
Responding officers apprehended the 27-year-old suspect at the scene. Police recovered a Taurus .32 pistol along with 12 matching rounds of live ammunition, both of which have been lodged as evidence.
Arrangements are underway to transport Smith’s body to Bartica and then to the Memorial Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the official cause of death.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
