Kaieteur Sports – Fresh off a historic silver-medal finish at the Caribbean Women’s Basketball Championship, the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) has unveiled a balanced 12-player squad that will represent the Golden Arrowhead at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2027 Centrobasket Qualifiers in Managua, Nicaragua.
The tournament is scheduled for July 12-18 at the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello, where eight of the region’s top national teams will compete for three coveted spots at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2027.
Guyana enters the competition riding a wave of confidence after producing a second-place performance at the women’s Caribbean Championship that earned the team a place on the continental stage.
The squad will open its Group B campaign on July 12 against El Salvador before taking on regional heavyweights Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands.
Headlining the roster are the talented Ramlall sisters—Amisha, Arshia and Ashna—whose contributions were instrumental in Guyana’s remarkable silver-medal run.
Their combination of scoring ability, defensive intensity and versatility has become a cornerstone of the national programme, and they are expected to once again play a leading role as Guyana seeks to make history.
The experienced core is further strengthened by captain Joy Brown, whose leadership and composure have been vital to the team’s recent success. Joining her are fellow veterans Ruth Adams and Anaya Clemons, both of whom were key contributors during the Caribbean Championship and bring valuable experience to a squad aiming to compete with some of the region’s strongest basketball nations.
The Federation has also placed its faith in the next generation, handing opportunities to newcomers Marley Edwards and Ava Thomas. Their inclusion reflects GBF’s commitment to developing emerging talent while maintaining a competitive balance between youth and experience.
Rounding out the squad are Kean Andrews, Keisha Copperfield, Jamaicy Ogle and Rehaicia Romain, giving Guyana a well-rounded roster capable of competing at both ends of the floor.
The team will once again be guided by head coach Kenneth Avent, alongside assistant coach Warren Wilson, who successfully steered Guyana to its breakthrough performance at the Caribbean Championship.
In announcing the squad, GBF president, Michael Singh, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to build on its recent achievements.
“We are incredibly proud of this group of women who have earned the right to step onto the continental stage and represent the Golden Arrowhead,” Singh said.
According to Singh, “our silver-medal performance at the Caribbean Championship proved what Guyana’s basketball programmes are capable of achieving. Under the guidance of our exceptional coaching staff, we are confident this team will display the grit, skill and national pride required to secure a spot in the 2027 AmeriCup.”
With momentum on their side and a roster featuring proven performers alongside exciting new talent, Guyana will travel to Nicaragua determined to continue its upward trajectory in regional basketball.
A top-three finish in the tournament would secure qualification for the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2027 and further cement what has already become one of the most successful periods in the history of Guyanese women’s basketball.
