Kaieteur News – Manager of the Institute of Health Science Education (IHSE) at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Rabindra Surujdin, was on Friday night killed in a vehicular accident along the Rupert Craig Highway, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The accident which occurred around 22:30hrs on Friday also involved his wife, 33-year-old Sophia MacDougal of Lot 464 Block 8 Mon Repos, ECD who is said to be in a critical condition at the GPHC.
According to reports, motorcar PAE 1926, which the couple was in, was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the Liliendaal Rupert Craig Highway when in the vicinity of the COVID-19 Hospital, the driver lost control and collided to the concrete median.
As a result of this, the car spun out of control and further collided to a concrete culvert on the northern side of the road and then went into a nearby drain.
Police reported that the driver and the occupant were taken out of the wrecked vehicle in an unconscious condition by public spirited citizens and an ambulance from GPHC arrived on the scene where the driver was seen and examined and later pronounced dead by a doctor.
MacDougal was taken to the hospital where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) suffering from head injuries. Police said an investigation has since been launched into the fatal accident.
Following the news of Surujdin’s death, the GPHC in a statement said it is deeply saddened.
“Endearingly known as ‘Robin’ to all, he was a light among us and touched so many lives with his warmth and humour. Robin was pleasant and always willing, and made any project he was a part of an enjoyable and easier experience for others: he was an exceptional human being who was respected and loved by all who knew him. This is a great loss for our institution, our country and humanity,” the hospital said.
