BCB/Brian Ramphal U-17 inter-zone tournament
The talented Lower Corentyne cricket team emerged as champions this past weekend when the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) hosted the finals of the Brian Ramphal Under-17 Inter-Zone tournament at the Area H Ground.
New Amsterdam/Canje lost by 8 wickets batting first. The visitors were bowled out for 88 from 30 overs with Zadden LaRose 24, Aviskhar Persaud 10 and Devon Wharton 11 managing double figures. Bowling for the champs – Matthew Pottaya 3-17, Kumar Deopersaud 3-15 and Afraz Budhoo 3-15, destroyed the New Amsterdam/Canje batting order.
In reply, Lower Corentyne strolled to 90 for 2 in the 22nd over, led by knocks from Rampersaud Ramnauth 31*, who had help from a few other of his teammates, including West Indies junior player Rampertab Ramnauth who had 27. D. Wharton had 1 for 40 and A. Beharry 1 for 24.
Meanwhile, the 3rd place match at No. 48 Ground featured the BCB/Brian Ramphal U-17 inter-zone tournament, which was won by West Berbice. Upper Corentyne made 95 all out in 28 overs batting first, Mohan Baichan leading the way with 13, was futile against the likes of Arif Khan 2-16, Rashad Gaffoor 2-12 and Jarrel Hemerding 2-12.
It was easy cruising for the dominant West Berbice side that made light work of the total, ending on 96 for 1. Good batting from the pair of Gaffoor, who had a great all-round game when he returned to score 45* with the bat as, Tulsiram Ramcharran added good support with 24 not out, to see his team home.
