Defending overall champ Wismar Multi face track champ Mackenzie High for honours
The storied rivalry between the leading track and field, cycling and swimming secondary schools in Linden, Christianburg Wismar Secondary (CWSS) ‘Multi” and arch rivals Mackenzie High School (MHS) are at it again for bragging rights when this year’s track and field events conclude the 2022 championships at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground starting at 9.00hrs this morning.
Coming into today’s track events, there are over fifty races carded. This follows the field events on Wednesday which ended with reigning overall champions CWSS slightly in the lead on 344 points from MHS with 339, Wisburg Secondary on 210, New Silvercity Secondary (NSS) with 195, Linden Foundation Secondary (LFS) 160, Harmony Secondary 141, Kwakwani Secondary 115, Marcia Craig Secondary 58 and Linden Technical Institute with 37.
GTU Linden Sports Committee Chairman Mr. Swain Ross informed that now his Committee is being allowed to find its feet seeing that the COVID-19 Pandemic had curtailed its activities until now.
While the Sports Committee was elected in November 20121, Ross took up that position in May of this year and has an almost new sports body to take on the massive task on ensuring District 10 (Upper Demerara/ Kwakwani) remains the top district having the record of most championships over the years at Nationals.
However, his role as Chairman was only affected in May this year because that term ended after the GTU Teachers Conference.
Looking at their preparations ahead of this year’s championships he said that the hype has been raised from the inter house sports among the schools in the region and that intensity is being taken to this inter schools championships at the primary and secondary levels. He expects keen and stiff competition from the various secondary schools today, mainly MHS and CWSS and also Wisburg, Linden Foundation and New Silvercity, but not ruling out the other schools. However, the fact is CWSS and MHS have been consistently the schools to beat at these perennial championships.
This cannot be denied since two of the country’s leading coaches Johnny Gravesande coaches Mackenzie Hugh athletes and Moses Pantlitz controls athletes from the Multi School and they have been producing some of the top athletes at the national level for some years now.
In the Teachers Championship CWSS topped with 99 points beating LFS on 66, LTI 57 placed third, MHS 52, Harmony 42, NSSS 41, Ituni 20, St Aidans 15, Kwakwani nine and Wisburg on six points.
