(Kaieteur News) – The Leader of the Opposition, the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) chief, Mr. Azruddin Mohamed has his back against a wall. He’s still fighting. The wall is unyielding, barbed with hostility. He’s carrying the fight to the PPP Govt. Pres Ali, PhD and all, is morbidly fearful of exchanging greetings with him. From close friend to sworn foe. Love does that, sometimes. Guyana’s politics is something alien to me.
The weak spots, blind spots, and giveaway leopard spots of the PPP, group and government, emphasize how much both are entangled in corruption. Corruption in procurement. Corruption in management. Corruption in statements. Corruption in what’s practiced. Corruption in standards avoided. Leading from the front on all of those is Mr. WIN, Mr. Mohamed. He is kicked to the corner, to the gutter. He’s still fighting. He is jukked in the back by his former PPP brothers, but still he stands. He and his group have been exposing and highlighting deep-seated decays in the PPP Govt. House lots shenanigans. Actual houses telling their own sordid tales. When it isn’t land, it’s money. If it is not which government luminary is involved, it is which family members have corruption written all across their foreheads. Like the mark of Cain, they condemn themselves. Agile minds. Fast hands. Fancy footwork. And a belly full of lies.
Since the PPP declared war against him and his kin, against him and WIN, Mr. Mohamed decided that the only course left was to wage his own war in return. It is a missed opportunity, a loss to Guyana, that the WIN man and his band toil alone. Where’s the PNC? What about the AFC? Corruption is everybody’s business. There are few bigger hot button issues in Guyana. Quite frankly, even PPP loyalists-ancient and modern- are fed up, choked up, and teared up with the endless assaults of government’s predators on the nation’s treasury, and the conscience of citizens. Take people for granted too long, and it doesn’t take too long for them to take offense. When Vice President Jagdeo, former kingmaker and now policymaker, was cautioned, he smirked. Wha is a li’l corruption? Nobody’s perfect. Boys will be boys when set free in a candy shop, and some girls like to go along for the ride. Hey, it’s the capitalist way. Plus, democracy is built on trial and error, has expansive room for correction.
This is where Mr. Azmo comes in; Mr. Democracy has labored quietly and effectively. In a coin toss between the CCJ (Mohamed) and the ICJ (Venezuela), the PPP’s preference is the CCJ. Get Mohamed going from here, so that comrades and cronies can get back to the business of stealing and camouflaging. Mr. Mohamed-innocent or guilty, railroaded or the real thing-has shown Guyanese how to confront challenges, carryon battling. Will his efforts be wasted? Will his going, now almost inevitable, signal the end of exposures of PPP corruption? Stabroek News is gone. The rest of the opposition has gone beyond the hill, and is still as a ghost on the corruption culture. Note is taken of the PNC’s, Dr. Terrence Campbell’s, energetic efforts in the interior. Though blocked, word still leaked: US millions in Guyana’s minerals cross the border(s), with Guyanese poorer for it. Is he the next extradition candidate being contemplated? History has shown that nothing is off the table, or off-limits, for the PPP.
Meanwhile, WIN Mohamed walks his lonely roads, grapples with his battles. He isn’t letting up. Does his digging. Cultivates his sources. Where is the rest of Guyana? The PPP knows it is as naked as a plucked duck when corruption is involved. It’s why Drs. Ali and Jagdeo go into overdrive and work overtime to deflect, dismiss, or disappear. Corruption cancers impact all Guyanese. Their voices must be heard. Their burning anger penetrating. Leaders must feel the heat.
