Kaieteur News – The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) is preparing to field a team to the 36th Annual FESUPO Classic and Equipped Power-lifting and Bench Press Championship slated for 6th to 11th September 2022 in Cacador – Santa Caterina, Brasil.
Team Guyana will be selected from among 26 shortlisted Athletes comprising the preliminary nominations. The Shortlist features a contingent of young athletes, which includes first-timers Keisha Abrigo and Shelly Gomes. Among the seniors are Bjorn Williams, Wasim Mohamed, and Romario Gonsalves.
Guyana’s preparation was initially toward the IPF/NAPF Regional Powerlifting Championships scheduled for the period August 14-20, 2022 in Panama City, Panama. However, Guyana’s participation has been redirected to its regional group, hence the South America Championship. Guyana enjoyed a successful championship at its last FESUPO outing in Uruguay in 2019.
The main hurdle to Guyana’s participation at this juncture is resources. The federation has solicited financial and material support from both the public and private sectors and is hoping for favorable responses to its requests to make participation possible.
In the meantime, the athletes continue to prepare in anticipation of participation. Guyana’s team will be prudently selected, well prepared, ready, and eager to proudly represent the Golden Arrowhead as they have done in the past.
The GAPLF anticipates a successful showing of its athletes and is appealing to potential sponsors to ensure their participation.
