West Indies losing streak extended to record 11
By Sean Devers
In brilliant sunshine yesterday, the smallest gathering of fans ever for any of the 25 ODIs played at Providence, watched as Bangladesh beat West Indies by four wickets in the third and final ODI to make a clean sweep of the three-match series.
Asked to bat, West Indies led by 73 from 109 balls with four fours and two sixes from Skipper Nicholas Pooran and 33 from Keacy Carty, who struck three boundaries which included a six, rallied West Indies to 179 from 48.4 overs.
Pooran and Carty, the first person from St Maarten to play International cricket, added 67 after joining forces at 16-3.
Only Romario Shepherd (19) and Rovman Powell (18) of the batters reached double figures as the top order again failed.
The 30-year-old left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, in his 13th ODI, was the architect of destruction with a career best of 5-28 from 10 overs. Nasum Ahmed (2-39) and Mustafizur Rahman (2-24) supported well for Bangladesh who responded with 179-6 in with nine balls to spare.
Litton Dass top-scored with 50 from 65 balls with five fours and a six and added 50 for the second wicket with Tamim Iqbal who made 34 from 52 balls with four boundaries.
Mahmudullah (26) and Nurul Hasan (32) were the other significant contributors.
Guyanese left-arm Gudakesh Motie, in only his third ODI, had 4-25 from 10 frugal overs.
This defeat extended West Indies’ losing streak in ODIs to 11, an unflattering record theyhave held twice.
From February 1, 2005 in Australia against Pakistan they began their first losing streak which they held for six months.
Set 179 to win. Tamim Iqbal and Litton Dass joined forces after Najmul Shanto (1) was caught behind off Alzarri Joseph at 20-1 in the seventh over.
The pair took the score to 70 with confident shots on the lush green and fast outfield before Motie removed both batters to leave Bangladesh on 96-2.
The 27-year-old spinner from Albion in Berbice, struck again without addition to the score by bowling Afif Hossain for a duck and when he induced Mosaddek Hossain (14) to miss-hit a catch to long-off at 116-5, West Indies were back in the contest.
Mahmudullah andNurul Hasan put together 31 before Mahmudullah went down the track to Pooran’s off-spin and was neatly stumped down the leg-side by Shai Hope.
However, Hasan (32) and Mehidy Miraz (16) saw Bangladesh to victory.
Earlier, West Indies quickly slipped to 16-3 after Brandon King (8) was bowled by Taijul Islam, Shai Hope (2) was stumped, as Islam struck again at 15-2.
A run later, Shamarh Brooks (4) was lbw to Mustafizur Rahman to bring Pooran to the crease and along with Carty, playing for the first time in the series they steadied the ship with sensible batting.
The pair embarked on ‘operation rebuild’ in sweltering heat on a pitch offering ‘something’ for the spinners.
Both batters looked good and used their feet nicely to the spinners and the fifty was posted in the 16th over with Carty depositing Nasum Ahmed for six.
Carty, when well set for his maiden fifty, skied Ahmed ‘miles’ into the air for Tamim Iqbal at mid-on to take the catch in the 27th over at 83-4.
Powell and Pooran added 34 before Powell, just after hitting a six, was bowled by Islam who also had Keemo Paul (6) stumped to leave West Indies on 125-6.
Pooran reached his ninth fifty from 93 balls with three fours and clobbered Mehidy Miraz, for consecutive sixes and a four in the same over much to the delight of the ‘handful’ of fans in the stands which included school children in their uniforms.
But Akeil Hosien (1) was bowled by Mosaddek Hossain as he played across the line at 146-7.
The 150 came up in the 42nd over before Pooran, 27 short of his second ODI ton, missed a flighted delivery outside off stump trying to play it into the onside and was bowled as Islam struck again at 150-8.
Motie (2) was bowled by Mustafizur Rahman at 153-9 before Shepherd, who hit a four and a six in his 19 from 22, missed a big heave and was bowled by Nasum Ahmed to end the innings.
West Indies will now focus on 3-match ODI series against India in Trinidad on July 22, 24 &27.
