Dear Editor,
I would like to take a moment to answer the question “Where are the voices in solidarity with the Education Minister?” posed by Attiya Baksh. My answer to the question is that it takes a special person to be counted as a Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.).
Editor, please inform the interlocutor that I will stand with the Minister when the time is right. However, please know that I will stand in solidarity when the learned Minister produces evidence of condemnation of those who burnt the school buses during last elections. I will stand with the Minister when there is a public apology to the Parliament and to the ex-Speaker of the Honourable House for leading the disregard of orders to remove a member who chose to ignore directions, and, to top it off, yelling “Rape” when police officers attempted to perform their duties. I will be the first to stand in solidarity when the Minister queries the leadership that shouted down President Granger when he was addressing Parliament.
However, while I ponder my support for the Minister, these are some questions that come to mind. Why should I stand in solidarity when the children cannot play in schoolyards cleared of grass and overgrown bushes, and when the schools need a paint job, fences sit in disrepair, and the drains and surroundings of these buildings are not the envy of the world?
Why would I not stand in solidarity, after the children in the hinterlands have proper transportation, instead of having to traverse miles and paddle rivers to school? In fact, why should I stand in solidarity when parents are called illiterate? Editor, when the time for standing in solidarity is right, the thought of playing with the idea of the Minister in the class of sus domesticus will be withdrawn.
Elevation to summa cum laude will no doubt be appropriate. Editor, there is a pesky question rolling around in my mind. Will there be a day when the supporters of the Minister can join me and shout, “The Minister is a G.O.A.T.”?
Sincerely,
Les Archer
