Quinton Sampson, Kevlon Anderson & Ronsford Beaton put Police in a commanding position against GNIC.
Kaieteur News – The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Division One Cricket commenced yesterday with the GISE, Star Party Rentals & Trophy Stall two-day cricket tournament at a sun-kissed Eve Leary ground and by stumps on the opening day Police were in charge in their own backyard.
Led by 4-31 from the 28-year-old Guyana and West Indies pacer Ronsford Beaton and two wickets apiece from First-Class left-arm spinner, Essequibian Anthony Adams and Berbician Alex Algoo, who ended the game on hat-trick, dismissed GNIC for 110 an hour after Lunch.
The Cops recovered from 68-6 to reach 242-6 in reply at the close despite 4-71 from Dwane Dick before he began to tire towards the end of the day when Quinton Sampson jumped into him with a brutal onslaught; hitting him for three consecutive sixes in the same over in a pugnacious unbeaten on 106 with nine sixes and five fours from 55 balls.
Sampson and Anderson, who executed some majestic shots, especially some imperious cover-drives, in his undefeated 93 decorated with five boundaries including a six, put together 174 in an unfinished seventh wicket stand.
Essequibian Beaton, who has played two ODIs and taken 64 wickets from 33 First-Class games, exploited a slow track which ‘stopped’ and made ‘playing through the line’ a difficult task, ripped out the top order to level GNIC struggling on 54-7 at Lunch.
Beaton first comprehensively bowled Quincy Ovid-Richardson for a duck with the third ball of the match without a run on the board before Marc Nicholson (1) was run out at 6-2.
Beaton up-rooted the middle stump of Dwain Dick (8) as he missed a drive at a pitched-up delivery on the sluggish track and heavy outfield to leave GNIC on 21-3.
Pacer Quinton Sampson then trapped Premchand Sookdeo (10) LBW at 29-4 before Adams, who played a single First-Class game for Guyana, induced Dexter Soloman (7) to edge a catch to Kemol Savory 33-5.
Beaton struck twice before the Interval when he removed both Roshidi Benjamin (7) and David Dick (11) in the space of a run as both batsmen were taken at short cover trying to negotiate back-of-the-length deliveries that ‘stopped’ on them as GNIC capitulated to 54-7 by lunch.
After the interval, Jermaine Grovener, who lived in St Lucia and the left-handed Jermaine Benjamin joined forces to orchestrate a recovery under cotton-wool like clouds which floated merrily from a blue sky over the Eve Leary sward.
Benjamin, who hit Adams back over his head for the game’s first six, was eventually LBW to Adams after batting for 100 minutes and reaching the boundary thrice and clearing it once in his 33.
Jeffery Blair joined the cautious Grovener and dumped Algoo for six before hitting him to long-on, while Trevon Jones was LBW first ball as Algoo finished on a hat-trick with Grovener being left unbeaten on 17 from near two hours at the crease.
When Police began their reply, Andrew Lyght Jnr, the son of the late West Indies ‘B’ team batsman, threw his wicket away with an irresponsible slug off Dick to be caught at long-on at 2-1 before the 24-year-old Savory, who played six List ‘A’ games for Guyana, was brilliantly taken at slip by Dick’s father to help the younger Dick, who produced some bounce and a bit of turn, to his second wicket and leave the score on 17-2.
Kevon Boodie was well set on 15 before he too threw his wicket away when tried to lift Blair over mid-on and was well taken by Jones at 22-3.
Algoo missed a reckless sweep at Dick and was LBW for a duck at 29-4 before Dick removed Mark Gonsalves (0) when he played across the line and was LBW at 31-5 and Dick was leading a wonderful GNIC fight-back.
Adams joined the elegant and level headed Anderson, who played some glorious cover-drives which the heavy outfield robbed him of boundaries before he deposited Dick for an effortless six.
Together with Adams they carried the score to 68 before Adams (14) played a loose drive to a short ball from off-spinner Jones and was taken at backward point as the Anderson, arguable the best young batsman in Guyana, was in danger of running out of partners.
However, Sampson pulled Dick for four and clobbered him over long-off for six to give the Lawmen first innings honours.
Sampson cut loose with a savage array of big hitting, but while Sampson was the butcher, Anderson was the surgeon as the partnership blossomed.
Today is the final day and plays starts at 09:30 hrs.
