The last competitive track meet which was the ‘Early Season Classic’ hosted by the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) was contested on March 16 at the National Track & Field Center (NTFC) at Leonora.
At that Meet, Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC) sprinter, Davin Fraser emerged as the fastest man on the day; he registered a blistering time of 10.26 seconds to finish ahead of Emanuel Archibald (10.32s) and Akeem Stewart (10.42s) in the event that had a fair amount of participation despite the threat of the covid-19 pandemic which is still affecting the nation seven months later.
Speaking Kaieteur Sport Fraser explained that he had a great off-season in 2019 and he was really feeling himself heading into the 2020 season and like most athletes, he is very disappointed not to have been able to compete due to the pandemic.
“The 2020 season started off well with the AAG hosting a few developmental meets where I ran well and was able to assess my level of preparedness. My coach and I saw that I was fit and ready to explode on the track which I did at the Early Season Classic. Even though I got the win, I was sure that I still had a bit more in the tank to register even faster times at the following meets; I am also sure that the likes of Archibald and Stewart would’ve pushed me all the way to run quicker.”
Last month, the AAG announced that several Meets on their calendar will not be contested this year including the National Youth and Juniors Championships, South American 10k, Aliann Pompey Invitational and the National Senior Championships, the latter which Fraser was most disappointed to miss out on.
The sprinter shared that although he understood the seriousness of the covid-19 virus and the social distancing guidelines in place; he stayed focus and kept fit during the lockdown period, filled with optimism that he would have a shot at dethroning Archibald as sprint champion.
However, Fraser will have to wait until next season to compete again and although regaining form can be challenging after not competing for a while, the 100m specialist is looking to pick up where he left off in early 2020 when athletics is given the green light for competition again.
