It’s up to one deciding game tonight, New Year’s Night, to crown a new champion when the Sixth GT Beer finalists collide as the Christianburg-based Eagles United face Net Rockers of Wismar for $1.2M at 21:00hrs, while the supporting game is between last year’s champions Botofago and Winners Connection for $600,000 at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground from 19:00hrs.
Eagles and Net Rockers were joint points leaders when they ended unbeaten in the recent Senior League championship but the Eagles side were declared winners because of a better goal difference 16 to 15 and this loss has not been taken lightly by Net Rockers who feel they were the rightful winners having scored more goals, while allowing more also.
This has left football fans divided because at the end of the day both sides had unblemished records.
This will be answered tonight however as this tournament will see one team losing and the winner carting off bragging rights in addition to the top monetary prize.
The Eagles side will continue their quest to be number one club and Coach Rawle ‘Jughead’ Huntley has changed up their formation to one that he feels supports a complete football game. Such has been his strategy that the promising young players have been given roles in this team.
Most notable is that Omar Brewley who was accustomed to be attacking on the forward line is now tasked with controlling the middle of their defensive formation, while Kendolph Lewis has excelled in that department after previously playing the wing on the front line with Brewley while they dominated the Christianburg Wismar Secondary days at the top of the nation’s school football in recent times.
But, this has worked for the Eagles United side and with Colwyn Drakes, another from the school system being thrown to the deep end of senior football duties, while not as sharp as he can be he has delivered some crucial goals for the Eagles team. Deron Charter has stepped up and despite the likelihood of team leader Clive DeNobrega being on the sidelines unless needed, the Christianburg side still looks capable of rising to the occasion. They will have between the uprights Yannick Simon and while Huntley admits the seriousness of the former national schemer DeNobrega, he does not rule out him taking the field.
Coach Huntley still thinks, however, his team’s total football game will see them emerging triumphant.
In fact, he is very impressed with Lewis’ play and how Brewley has settled in at the back. It is now left to the team to execute according to him because they will be ready for this big clash.
On the other hand Net Rockers Coach Eon ‘Axeman’ skills has always felt that his team plays organized football and while they can run teams out of the ground with their pace and power, they would rather play according to the game plan.
He must know how they faltered against Botofago last year 4-1 in the final and are looking past that loss. They have shown grace and speed if not when they face Winners Connection to qualify with a 2-1 win in the semifinals, but generally do.
The Rockers forward line has Clarence Huggins and the inform Denzil Pryce should pose problems for Eagles United. Orande Wills and Devon Caesar and Shane Luckie coming through the middle would be a threat at this level with Leonard Wilson; and with the defenders being a collective bunch with Omeion Wills, Deshawn Joseph and Mark McLean combining their efforts. Eagles must be on top of their game to beat this Rockers side which has in goal Compton Burnett.
