Phase three of the Construction of the Synthetic Track which entails ground preparations at the famous Burnham Park has finally begun. The contract which has been awarded to BK International was scheduled to commence a few weeks ago, but was delayed.
With phases one and two which consisted of preliminary works, surveys and the tendering process being out of the way, phase three which covers a major part of the work is on the way. Consultancy works were undertaken by consultants from the BSW Regapaul Company from Germany.
BK International was awarded $141 Million to do the work which should take three to six months to be completed.
This third phase is expected to involve demarcation, land clearing, laying of drainage pipes, inner and outer track works and asphalting.
A lone Hymac was in place doing excavation work in the areas which is proposed to house the main track. Minister of Social Cohesion George Norton had said that he was pleased that the work is heading in the right direction. The Minister is of the view that once the tracks are available, Guyana should be able to produce the next Usain Bolt and its first Olympic Gold Medal. He had stated that Guyana can only unearth world champions if the necessary facilities are in place.
When completed the tracks will be 400M in dimension and outfitted with eight-lanes. It is expected to be similar to the dimensions of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany. It will also have all facilities to host International Track and Field events.
A full size football field will be constructed on the inside of the track, while efforts will be made to construct other games areas, stands and other necessities according to the availability of space and funds.
The project is being funded by the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Social Cohesion, Culture Youth and Sports and The Ministry of Education.
