Both semifinals of the Smalta under-12 girls’ football tournament were contested yesterday at the Ministry of Education (MOE) and at the end of the day’s play, North Georgetown and West Ruimveldt came out victorious in each match.
In the feature match at the Carifesta Avenue venue, North needled defending champions South Ruimveldt via a tame Christal Archer shot which was handled poorly by Ruimveldt’s custodian in the 21st minute of the match.
North held on to that one goal lead and snuffed out all attacking threats from South Ruimveldt’s skipper and leading goal scorer Fayan Henry, who was isolated at the top.
With that result, it means that a new champion will be crowned and that West Ruimveldt girls’ coach, Jamal Pedro, noted that his side will be looking to go one better than the boys team that had lost in the final last month to St. Pius.
West Ruimveldt didn’t had a easy going against St. Pius girls who ensured that the match had to be decided via kicks from the penalty mark.
Seona France had given the finalists an early lead with a successful strike in the 5th minute but Christal Archer levelled up just before halftime.
However, West held their nerve to win the shootout 3-2.
The tournament will come to a close next week Sunday and the full fixtures for the day’s play are as follows:
