A man who was caught vandalizing the property of the Mayor and City Council on the malls between Church Street and North Road, jumped into the trench at Albert Street and North Road in an attempt to evade police.
The man, who later said his name was Carl Fredericks, was under the Albert Street bridge hiding. There was a crowd who wanted to see who the thief was.
The police came and left the location on two occasions since the conditions of the trench in which the man had tried to evade the law, was in a condition that would turn a person’s stomach.
This was a very unsafe situation the thief had gotten himself into since some years ago another thief had died under the same bridge, under similar circumstances, after the water had risen and caused the man to drown.
Attempts were then made by City constables to talk the man from under the bridge. This proved futile.
A public-spirited citizen then talked to the man, and explained the dangers of his actions, and the need to own up to his wrongdoings. Fredericks accepted that he was wrong and was remorseful of his actions and decided to come out from under the bridge and turn himself over to City Police.
