(Kaieteur News) – The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) is preparing to spend some $829,967,355 to construct a cold storage facility and a timber wharf at Goed Fortuin, Region Three.
This is according to an invitation for bids issued by the ministry which states that tenders are expected to open on May 21, 2026.
This publication understands that the facilities will support the fisherfolk in the Goed Fortuin area.
According to a June 2025 Department of Public Information article, President Irfaan Ali had visited the Goed Fortuin fishing area where he announced plans to construct a cold storage and build the wharf, along with other upgrades.

During his engagement, the president outlined a clear vision for transforming the area into a more organised and secure space.
According to DPI, among the immediate interventions promised were the rehabilitation of the non-functional koker, installation of proper lighting to enable safe operations and the construction of walkways, and a wharf for docking and offloading.
Wherever there is a need for dredging that will also be done, the president noted.
“A key element of the transformation is the creation of a designated space for small-scale retail and holding activities. This would allow the vendors and fishers to sell and store goods directly on-site. It will be complemented by enhanced security and essential utilities to support daily operations,” DPI reported.
President Ali urged the fisherfolk to identify land for prawns, crab and shrimp production. To support this, the government will finance the construction of processing and cold storage facilities to enhance the value of their produce.
This publication understands that the intervention at Goed Fortuin forms part of a broader national strategy to raise the standard of facilities to support grassroots economic activity, such as fishing.
The project forms part of NDIA’s $81 billion allocation which was approved in the 2026 national budget.
