(Kaieteur News) – In a move to advance a national initiative to improve urban sanitation, public health, and environmental management in Guyana, Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has invited Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from “qualified and experienced contractors, firms, service providers, and investors for the design, build, financing (where applicable), operation, and maintenance of Modern Public Convenience (restroom) Facilities.”
The tender notice states that as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance urban sanitation, public health and the overall aesthetics, the ministry seeks to establish a network of clean, safe, accessible, and environmentally sustainable public convenience facilities at strategic locations.
The ministry said the initiative’s primary objective is to provide safe, hygienic, and accessible restroom facilities for residents and visitors.
“Reduce indiscriminate disposal of human waste and associated environmental impacts; support urban renewal and tourism development in Guyana; (and) promote sustainable and innovative sanitation solutions,” the ministry explained.
For interested parties, the ministry stated that they shall submit proposals that may include, but are not limited to provision for design and construction and/ or installation of durable, modern, safe, and vandal-resistant public restrooms.
Scope of work also includes the provision of water-efficient and environmentally sustainable systems (e.g solar power, wastewater management solutions), routine cleaning, operation, and maintenance of facilities, and staffing and security arrangements.
The ministry noted that interested contractors shall submit compliance with national health, safety, and environmental standards.
In its document, the ministry disclosed also that all facilities must comply with recognized accessibility standards for persons with disabilities, including but not limited to adequate wheelchair turning radius, grab bars and support fixtures, appropriate fixture heights, slip-resistant surfaces, and barrier-free access routes.
