Dear Editor,
I would like to bring to the attention of this newspaper and to the public the issue of the NATIONAL INSURANCE SCHEME. The part which really bothers me is the claims department at Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
My father was employed at the Rose Hall Estate but upon the closing down he was transferred to the Albion Estate. He had a work accident and was unable to work for a few weeks. He had made his NIS claim at the New Amsterdam office. The claim was then subsequently transferred to the Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.
This claim was filed since in March and we are now at July 30. It is so frustrating because he has to get a car from New Amsterdam to Port Mourant just to find out his claim is not ready. Now you may ask why not call? Let me enlighten you about “what a wonderful experience” that is.
The first time we called 336-6577 the staff said to call 336-6578. I tried that number for an entire day it either rang out or the busy tone came on. The next day I called back the 333-6577 and told the staff of my experience. She was kind enough to take my information and assist me but my mistake was I didn’t take her name.
She had advised me to call back the following week which I did. Again I was told to call 336-6578 and it came as no surprise that I didn’t get through. I took it even further to call the Brickdam office and I was advised that they cannot help me, that I have to call the same number until I get through.
What kind of customer service are these people offering to the public who every month have to pay up their contributions?
If my dad has to take a car every week to go and find out if his claim is ready who will compensate him for his expense? Or if it has a query how will he know?
This is really hard on the poor hard working citizens of Guyana and I am sure my father is not the first case and that there are a lot of persons who have similar cases. I would really appreciate if someone can look into this matter.
Kind regards,
Kelly Ally.
