Part of the action on opening night of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ National Playoffs at the Pouderoyen Tarmac.
Defending national champions Dave & Celena All Stars may have already made an emphatic statement which is that their win last year was no fluke after joining counterparts Silver Bullets in the semi-finals of this year’s Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ National Playoffs which got underway on Friday evening, at the Pouderoyen Tarmac.
The holders who made the trek down to the West Side from their base in Linden opened their defence with a stiff test against Leopold Street and narrowly escaped with a 1-0 penalty shootout win after regulation time failed to break a 0-0 stalemate.
In their second engagement, they once again had to dig deep to scrape past another team from the Mining Town in Swag Entertainment with a 1-0 win. Tyric McAllister’s 10th minute strike was enough to secure their semi-final berth.
However, the visiting contingent from Linden was not done there as Zone champions Silver Bullets booked their spot in the last four with victories over West Side Ballers and Bartica’s Disconnection Crew, who impressed on their first outing.
The Bullets first survived a tense 3-2 win over West Side ballers after regulation time ended 1-1, before returning to cut off the livewire Disconnection Crew with Jermaine Samuels proving to be the hero, courtesy of his 6th minute effort.
West Side champs Showstoppers, Leopold Street, ESPN, Ballers, Disconnection Crew and Swag Entertainment were the teams to be eliminated.
Meanwhile, Round two of the competition is set for Wednesday, August 1 (Emancipation Day), at the Haslington Tarmac when some of the ‘big guns’ like Sparta Boss, Bent Street, West Front Road, Trafalgar, Uprising, Buxton Diamond and Paradise will square off for the remaining two semi-final spots.
