Elmo Adams, a miner whose age up to press time was not known, died yesterday morning when the pit in which he and others were working caved in at Imbaimadai, Upper Mazaruni.
Persons said the incident took place as he was jetting the pit.
This was confirmed by ‘F’ Division Commander, Kevin Adonis.
After the pit caved in, the man’s co-workers rushed to his assistance and had to dig several feet down being reaching him.
When he was found, he was not breathing. He was rushed to nearby facility where a doctor was and was pronounced dead on arrival. An investigation is said to be underway.
There have been a number of mining deaths over the years with the Coalition Government ordering inquiries into them.
Negligence has been found to be a major problem.
