Under their Tribute to Outstanding Teachers Programme, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) and Scotiabank, nine (9) outstanding teachers drawn from schools in the Berbice were on Sunday last honoured.
Undertaken by the club’s Cricket Teams, the Teachers of the Year – 2016 for their respective schools were drawn from the Lower Corentyne Secondary, J.C. Chandisingh Secondary, Port Mourant Secondary, New Amsterdam Secondary, Corentyne Comprehensive, Rose Hall Town Primary, Rose Hall Town Nursery, Belvedere Primary and Tain Primary Schools.
The main objective of the Scotiabank Tribute to Teachers programme is to recognise teachers who are making a positive difference in the educational sector and is designed to inspire educators to perform to the highest standard; to be role models for students and to inspire youths to enter the teaching profession.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster stated that the programme is organised on an annual basis as part of the Say NO/Say YES campaign. The schools involved are the ones closely aligned to the RHTY&SC and the teachers honoured were Nikita Loncke – RHT Primary, Eric Seenarine Rose Hall Town Primary, Christel Lester Nedd – Tain Primary, Ms. Naressa Drijodhan – Belvedere Primary, Rajwattie Pertals-Jainarine – CCHS, Orletta John – NASS, Deborah Tambaran – J.C.C.S.S, Sharon Hawker – LCSS and Tracy Austin-Jonas – PMSS.
Foster who has served as the RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO since 2000 congratulated the awardees and urged them to always strive for success. He spoke on the importance of teachers being positive role models to their students in and out of the classroom.
The RHTY&SC, he stated was able to attracted discipline and committed members because of the hard work and commitment of teachers in the Lower Corentyne district. The Secretary/CEO also expressed gratitude to the Management of Scotiabank for their continued confidence in the Club and special mention was made of Marketing Executive Ms. Jennifer Cipriani, Acting President and Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Minister of Social Protection Amna Ally, Regional Chairman David Armogan and RHTY&SC President Keith Foster, also congratulated the awardees.
Nagamaootoo presented the awards to the recipients who received a collection of gifts along with a trophy, medal and framed certificate. The cricket teams that organised the event were the Farfan and Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19 and Intermediate, Metro Female and Gizmos and Gadgets Under-21 and First Division teams.
