The opening day of the four-day Caribbean Union of Teachers Les Harris t20 cricket tournament involving hosts Guyana, Trinidad &Tobago, Bahamas and early favourites Jamaica bowled of yesterday at the DCC
ground in Queenstown.
In the opening game, a Guyana Teachers team boasting the likes of Renole Bourne, Wayne Osborne, Balram Samaroo, Andre Williams, Albert Sinclair and Darnell Douglas were defeated by Jamaica by 83-runs despite 51 from Douglas.
Watched by a large and vocal crowd, Jamaica reached 184 with Gavaskar Malachi leading the way with 63. He got support from Keith Hibbert who made 49 as Festus Benn (2-34) and Kevin Paul (2-30) doing the damage with the ball for the Guyanese.
When Guyana began their reply needing to score at 9.2 runs per over to win, they were never in the hunt as only Douglas and Samaroo (18) reached double figures as they were dismissed for 101 in 16.5 overs.
Carl Briggett (4-8), Gerald Morgan (2-4) and Malachi (2-12) bowled the team from ‘Yard’ to victory.
In the afternoon game T&T defeated Bahamas by 91 runs after being led to 169-5 by Christopher Siewsankar (49), Vinood Maraj (26) and Kirti Kalpoo (19).
Bahamas were bundled out for 78 in 16.5 overs with Siewsankar returning with the ball to take 2-10.
The action continues today at the GDF ground with Guyana playing in the opening game at 09:30 hrs game vs. Trinidad and Tobago, while to follow Jamaica face Bahamas. (Sean Devers)
