A 21-year-old man was killed and two of his friends are hospitalized following an accident around 09:30 hrs yesterday at Salem, Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
The dead man has been identified as Marlon Deol Gobin, of Parika Public Road. He died on the spot while his friends, who have been identified as Ricky Ramnauth and Abdul, were rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital for treatment.
Gobin and Abdul were passengers in a Toyota Premio bearing registration number PVV 438 driven by Ramnauth when the tragedy occurred.
The police said that inquiries disclosed that the vehicle was proceeding south along the Salem Public Road, when the driver lost control and the vehicle veered west of the public road, turned-turtle and ended up in a canal.
Kaieteur News understands that the three friends were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Traffic ranks at the scene said that the three individuals were pinned in the car for approximately 20 minutes and were removed by public spirited persons.
Yesterday, the dead man’s father, Mohan Gobin, said that he left his son and friends liming and imbibing at his home Monday morning and had no idea that the young man had left home to go out with his friends.
Gobin said that when he received the call that his son was involved in an accident, he thought it might have been a mistake since he saw his son at home around 04:00 hrs yesterday and thought that he might have been in bed relaxing.
“When I go up to his room, I see he was not in bed so we went to the scene. When we got there, people had already pulled out his body and placed it on the road and his friends were already taken to the hospital,” the elderly man said.
While he could not say for sure where his son was heading, he assumed that they were heading to Ramnauth’s home since he lives in the area where the accident occurred.
Meanwhile, the 21-year-old, who worked in his father electronic shop, at Parika leaves to mourn his parents and sibling.
