Winners Connection, Western Tigers and Police advance
The semifinal line up of the Mayor’s Cup football championship have been decided as the four remaining teams march closer to one of them claiming the Mayor’s Cup and Aruwai first prize of $700,000.
In the quarterfinal action played on Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Federal Winners Connection out of Linden Town stuck the needle in Riddim Squad of Mocha to clinch a 1-0 triumph and a place in the semis. Derrol Dainty struck in the 67th minute for the Lindeners and they held firm as no other goal was scored by either side to ensure their safe passage.
Western Tigers turned on the heat on another Linden team, Eagles, sending them packing 7-2 in a rampaging display, indicating they are there to claim the title. Dwayne McClennon (2, 23, 47) fired home a hat-trick, Dellon Kelly (57), Randolph Wagner (75), Andre Webber (79) and Phillip Rowley (81) accounted for Western’s other goals. Jammacy Simon (57, 87) snuck in a double for Eagles.
In the last game of the night Police handcuffed Santos, inflicting a 3-0 thrashing on them as the lawmen marched comfortably into the penultimate stage of the competition. After the early exchanges and the play had settled, Police got into their rhythm and struck at strategic times during the contest to record their goals with no answer from Santos. Quincy Holder fired home in the 35th minute to give them a 1-0 advantage going into the break.
Dwain Charles (53) extended Police’s lead to 2 soon after the resumption, while Holder completed his double in the 68th minute to see the lawmen home.
Sunday at Victoria on the East Coast the semifinals are set to commence from 6:30pm with Police coming up against Federal Winners Connection of Linden in the curtain raiser, while in the nightcap at 8:30pm, Ann’s Grove, who had earlier made it through, come up against Western Tigers. Two entertaining matches are promised Sunday.
Leading the goal scoring tally to date is Dwayne McClennon with 5 and he could up that tally come Sunday. Others in range are his Tigers teammates Randolph Wagner (3) and Dellon Kelly (2), while Nickosi Denny of Ann’s Grove, Keron Boston and Quincy Holder both of Police have 2 apiece.
