Kaieteur Sports – West Indies wrapped up what was an already dead series with a confidence-boosting 6-run win via the Duckworth Lewis System (DLS), thanks to a collaborative team effort with bat and ball yesterday at Johannesburg.
South Africa may have won the series but the win yesterday had most certainly helped to restore some of the confidence lost between this and the Afghanistan series which both finished with a 2-1 scoreline.
Windies continued their good batting effort despite the various hurdles, looking like another big score prior to the reduction of overs posting, 114-3 after 10 overs.
Captain Shai Hope cracked 48 off 25 with 4 sixes and 2 fours, added 86 for the 2nd wicket alongside Shimron Hetmyer, who also scored 48.
The Guyanese, who was probably the best batsmen for the Windies this series, smashed 6 sixes and a four off 22 balls, which helped the Windies to keep their momentum after another disappointing performance from Johnson Charles (0).
Fast-bowlers Kwena Maphaka (1-21) and Lungi Ngidi (1-19) had good spells along with left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj (1-38) for South Africa.
Windies left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie (3-17) led with an exceptional game after making his return for the series; with a wicket apiece for Jason Holder, Shamar Joseph and Akeal Hosein.
South Africa then chipped away at the total despite still needing 10 runs an over, to end on 118-6, with two deliveries remaining.
Fresh off his ton, Quinton de Kock hit a quick 28 (4×4 1×6), with help from all-rounder Jason Smith (26), Dewald Brevis (17), George Linde (17), Ryan Rickelton (15) and Tristan Stubbs (10) failed to get their team home.
South Africa, although racing to 50 inside the first powerplay, found themselves needing 9 runs off the last two deliveries, to which Joseph held his composure against the capable pair of Corbin Bosch (2*) and Stubbs.
Meanwhile, Hope and Hetmyer were ultra aggressive during the opening stages of the match, taking a liking especially to Maharaj and skipper Aiden Markram who disappeared for 18 off his one over bowled.
Bad light eventually stopped play, thus forcing a reduction of overs in the game while putting the South Africans in a tight spot of bother during the run-chase.
Scores: West Indies 114 for 3 (Hetmyer 48, Hope 48) beat South Africa 118 for 6 (de Kock 28, Motie 3-17) by 6 runs – DLS. (Clifton Ross)
