GAPLF echoes favourable sentiments, applauding Govt’s $6B budgetary allocation to sports

Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) joins fellow sporting bodies in applauding the Government of Guyana for the significant monetary provisions made in the 2026 National Budget, presented last Monday. The allocation of $6 billion to sports is viewed as both sustainable and strategic, representing a long-term investment aimed at elevating the standard of the local sports sector.

For the powerlifting fraternity, this allocation signifies a major commitment to talent development and the enhancement of sporting infrastructure nationwide. The announcement by Hon. Dr. Ashni Singh was met with great enthusiasm, as it clearly demonstrates the Government’s strong commitment to investing in sport. The investment is intended to expand opportunities for athlete development while complementing broader national priorities, including health, youth empowerment, and tourism development.

Athletes across all disciplines will be further motivated to train and compete at higher levels, confident that with a clear national vision, prudent management, and strategic planning within their respective federations, achievable and sustainable development pathways can be established.

The Federation is particularly encouraged by the emphasis placed on the development of professional coaches. There is an urgent need for meaningful investment in the technical aspects of sport to ensure that athletes have access to modern training methodologies and advanced preparation techniques necessary to effectively challenge international competitors.

Additionally, the powerlifting fraternity welcomes the Government’s continued support for hosting international teams and competitions in Guyana. This initiative aligns closely with the Federation’s developmental objectives, as exposure to international competition is critical to athlete growth and supports the national vision of positioning Guyana as a sports tourism hub within the Caribbean.

The Federation is also extremely encouraged by the announcement of investment in Guyana’s first-ever dedicated powerlifting and high-performance facility. This landmark development is expected to significantly enhance athlete preparedness and help maintain Guyana’s competitiveness at both the regional and international levels.

In its release, the Federation extended congratulations to Hon. Charles Ramson Jr., Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Hon. Steven Jacobs, Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, stating:

“We would like to congratulate Hon. Charles Ramson Jr. and Hon. Steven Jacobs for their exceptional leadership and for fostering a genuine and open partnership with all sporting bodies. This collaborative approach will undoubtedly contribute to greater success for sports and our athletes across Guyana.”
