PNCR GECOM commissioners reject call to discuss status
Kaieteur News – Responding to a request by opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed to meet, Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) opposition commissioners Vincent Alexander, Desmond Trotman and Charles Corbin, said they saw no reason for a meeting to discuss their status on the commission.

In the letter dated January 31, 2026, the commissioners said they are cognizant of WINs public pronouncements about their status, and calls for their resignation, along with other disparaging remarks.
“In these circumstances, we do not accept that there is any basis for a meeting to discuss our status as commissioners,” the letter to the opposition leader said.
Azzrudin, who is also leader of the We Invest in Nation (WIN) party, had requested a meeting with the three PNC-R nominated commissioners on Sunday, to discuss, among other things, the vacation of their seats on the commission.
The commissioners said while they would agree to meet with Mohamed or his representatives on all matters pertaining to GECOM, their status as commissioners was “a sine qua non subject to legislative or judicial intervention.”
In this light, the commissioners suggested that the initial meeting be convened at a neutral and mutually agreed venue.”
Late last week Mohamed told Kaieteur News that he had invited the three commissioners to a meeting to formally ask them to vacate the post.
“I will be meeting with the commissioners to have a chat with them on the way forward as it relates to see if they will be able to still serve, because what I’m hearing is that they’re medically unfit. That is what we are hearing. So, I will be meeting with them on Sunday morning to discuss [these issues],” he said.
Mohamed told Kaieteur News that he had made several attempts to contact APNU representatives to no avail. He said he had called APNU leader Aubrey Norton to discuss several matters regarding parliament, however those calls were unanswered and never returned.
“I called Mister Campbell; he never returned my call. So, I don’t know how we going to move forward,” he stated.
Mohamed indicated last week that he intended to formally request that the APNU-appointed commissioners on GECOM, vacate their seats.
The request came days after Mohamed’s election as leader of the opposition, a position previously held by the People’s National Congress-led APNU, whose nominees currently occupy the three opposition seats on GECOM. With WIN now the main opposition, new commissioners from the party are expected to take their place.
On Thursday, Mohamed told Kaieteur News that he and his team met with GECOM’s chairperson, Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh and Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Vishnu Persaud to discuss the appointment of scrutineers and the status of the commissioners following his election as the new leader of the opposition.
He said his team plans to follow due process which entails utilising every avenue to ensure the party’s interests are represented at the level of GECOM. “I cannot disclose at this moment for obvious reasons but [the course of action] will depend on the response we receive when we write the commissioners,” Mohamed stated.
